Gareth Southgate Honored with Knighthood in New Year 2025 Honours List

Posted on December 31, 2024

Former England manager Gareth Southgate has been awarded a knighthood in the 2025 New Year Honours list, recognizing his significant contributions to English football. Southgate, who led the Three Lions for eight years, is one of only two managers to guide the England men's team to a major tournament final, alongside the legendary Sir Alf Ramsey. Under his leadership, England reached the semi-finals of the 2018 World Cup and the finals of both the 2020 European Championship and Euro 2024, showcasing a remarkable turnaround in the team's fortunes.

In addition to his tournament successes, Southgate's tenure is noted for fostering a strong team spirit and improving the national side's performance in knockout matches. He achieved nine knockout wins, a notable increase compared to the six victories secured from 1966 until his appointment in 2016. However, his time at the helm concluded following consecutive finals defeats, the latter resulting in his resignation shortly after the Euro 2024 loss to Spain.

Tributes have poured in for Southgate since the announcement of his knighthood. FA Chair Debbie Hewitt praised him as one of England's "greatest ever managers," highlighting his ability to connect fans with the team, as well as his leadership and advocacy on social issues. Former players and pundits, including Jamie Carragher and Gary Neville, have also commended Southgate's achievements, emphasizing the unity he brought to the squad and the pride he instilled in representing England. Southgate previously received an OBE in 2018, and this latest honor reflects his enduring impact on the sport and his legacy within English football.
