Celtics Suffer Historic Collapse in Loss to Thunder

Posted on January 06, 2025

The Boston Celtics experienced a nightmarish performance in their recent game against the Oklahoma City Thunder, culminating in a disheartening 105-92 defeat. After entering halftime with a 10-point lead, the Celtics completely fell apart in the second half, managing to score a mere 27 points—a record low for any team in the NBA this season after halftime. Their offensive struggles were stark, as they connected on only eight of their 40 field goal attempts in the second half, with a dismal 15 points in the third quarter and just 12 in the fourth.

This performance not only marks the fewest points scored by any team in the second half this season, but it also highlights the Celtics' inability to maintain their momentum after a solid first half. The statistics reveal that their second-half scoring was even worse than that of the New Orleans Pelicans, who previously held the record for the lowest scoring half of the season. The Thunder capitalized on Boston's missteps, showcasing their defensive prowess with standout plays, including an impressive block by Shai Gilgeous-Alexander on Jayson Tatum, followed by an alley-oop dunk by Isaiah Hartenstein.

Despite this setback, the Celtics remain in a strong position overall, holding the second-best record in the Eastern Conference and the third-best in the league with just 10 losses this season. Coach Joe Mazzulla and his team will surely look to regroup and address the glaring issues that led to such a poor performance, understanding that even the best teams can have off nights.
