Chelsea Eyeing Return for Marc Guehi from Crystal Palace

Posted on January 07, 2025

Chelsea is reportedly interested in re-signing Marc Guehi, the 24-year-old England defender currently with Crystal Palace. This interest comes despite Guehi having been sold to Palace for £18 million in 2021, prior to the club's takeover by the current ownership group led by Todd Boehly and Clearlake Capital. While there has been no official approach made by Chelsea to Palace, Guehi's representatives are aware of the interest from his former club.

Guehi has 18 months remaining on his contract with Crystal Palace, having signed a five-year deal upon his arrival. Chelsea’s pursuit of the defender underscores their ongoing efforts to strengthen their defensive lineup, especially after losing Wesley Fofana to a significant hamstring injury, which could sideline him for the rest of the season. Additionally, Benoit Badiashile is also unavailable until at least February, highlighting a pressing need for defensive reinforcements.

During his time at Chelsea, Guehi made only two senior appearances before spending a loan spell at Swansea City. Since joining Crystal Palace, he has established himself as a key player, earning 22 caps for the England national team. In the summer transfer window, Palace rejected four bids from Newcastle for Guehi, the last of which was reported to be worth up to £65 million, showing the high regard in which he is held. Chelsea may also consider recalling Trevoh Chalobah from his loan at Palace as another potential defensive option.
