Barcelona Secures Temporary Registrations for Olmo and Pau Víctor Amid Ongoing Dispute
Posted on January 09, 2025
Barcelona has successfully obtained temporary playing registrations for Dani Olmo and Pau Víctor as the club navigates a legal battle with LaLiga and the Spanish Football Federation (RFEF) regarding compliance with financial fair play regulations. The Consejo Superior de Deportes (CSD), Spain's top sports court, ruled that both players will be eligible to participate until a final decision is reached in the ongoing case. However, this ruling comes too late for them to feature in Barcelona's recent 2-0 victory over Athletic Club in the Spanish Super Cup.
In a statement, LaLiga expressed its disagreement with the CSD's decision and indicated that it is considering an appeal. The league has stated that they will review the resolution carefully to determine the appropriate course of action. The contention stems from Barcelona's failure to register Olmo and Víctor by the December 31 deadline, which was a result of the club not demonstrating compliance with LaLiga's financial fair play rules. Despite this setback, the club managed to extend their spending cap by January 3, fulfilling certain financial requirements.
Both players, who joined Barcelona on permanent deals last summer, were previously registered under a temporary rule that allows clubs to allocate up to 80% of a salary from an injured player, in this case, Andreas Christensen. While the CSD's final ruling could take up to three months, it is anticipated that the process will not extend that long. Olmo and Víctor are now set to be available for selection in the upcoming final against either Real Madrid or Mallorca, marking a positive development for the team amidst the ongoing administrative challenges.
