Patrick Kluivert Aims to Lead Indonesia to World Cup Glory
Posted on January 16, 2025
Dutch football legend Patrick Kluivert has officially been appointed as the head coach of Indonesia's national team, with the ambitious goal of qualifying for the World Cup for the first time since the nation gained independence. Kluivert, who is celebrated for his illustrious playing career with clubs like Ajax and Barcelona, expressed his determination during a press conference in Jakarta. He emphasized the team's commitment to treating each upcoming match as a crucial final, stating, "The most important thing is to have results and impact."
Kluivert has signed a two-year contract with the Indonesian football association (PSSI), with the option for a two-year extension. He arrives with former Dutch midfielder Denny Landzaat as an assistant coach. The appointment follows the controversial dismissal of South Korean coach Shin Tae-yong, who had previously guided Indonesia to the third round of the Asian qualifiers for the 2026 World Cup. Currently ranked 127th by FIFA, Indonesia sits third in their qualifying group, needing to secure a higher position to advance directly to the World Cup.
With their next crucial qualifier against Australia looming in March, Kluivert emphasized the need for unity and support behind the team. He highlighted that achieving the goal of World Cup qualification requires collective effort and determination. As Kluivert takes the reins, hopes are high that his experience and leadership will propel Indonesia toward footballing success on the international stage.
