Gabriel Martinelli Faces Extended Absence Due to Hamstring Injury
Posted on February 08, 2025
Arsenal winger Gabriel Martinelli has been ruled out for over a month following a hamstring strain sustained during the Carabao Cup semi-final against Newcastle. The injury adds to a growing list of concerns for the Gunners, as they are already without key players like Gabriel Jesus, who is out for the season with an ACL injury, and Bukayo Saka, who is not expected to return until mid-March. This situation leaves Arsenal a bit thin in attacking options, particularly since they did not bolster their squad during the January transfer window.
The injury occurred just before half-time when Martinelli was substituted after appearing to grip the back of his thigh. His absence could significantly impact Arsenal's upcoming fixtures, including crucial Premier League matches against Leicester City, West Ham, and Nottingham Forest throughout February. Additionally, Martinelli's fitness will be in question for high-stakes games against Manchester United and Chelsea in March, as well as the Champions League last-16 tie set for the same period.
With limited attacking depth, manager Mikel Arteta acknowledged the need for tactical flexibility. Players like Leandro Trossard, Ethan Nwaneri, and Raheem Sterling may need to step up in Martinelli's absence. Arsenal's failure to secure additional forward options in the January transfer window has left them in a precarious position as they aim to maintain their challenge in the Premier League, where they currently sit six points off the top, trailing Liverpool.
