Manchester United Edges Past Leicester City with Late Winner

Posted on February 08, 2025

Manchester United secured a dramatic 2-1 victory over Leicester City in the FA Cup fourth round, thanks to a last-minute goal from Harry Maguire. The match, held at Old Trafford, had the home side coming from behind after Leicester took the lead with a goal from Bobby De Cordova-Reid in the 42nd minute. United, however, rallied in the second half, with Joshua Zirkzee leveling the score in the 68th minute before Maguire's injury-time header sealed the win.

Leicester started strong, capitalizing on United's slow start. They opened the scoring when Bilal El Khannouss set up De Cordova-Reid, who managed to find the net despite a save from United keeper Andre Onana. The home crowd grew increasingly frustrated with United's lackluster first-half performance, which saw them fail to register a shot on target. Criticism from pundits, including Roy Keane, highlighted the team's inadequacies during the opening stages.

United's fortunes changed in the second half as they increased their intensity. Zirkzee's goal came after a well-placed cross from Alejandro Garnacho, allowing the young forward to find the net easily. With the match seemingly heading for extra time, Maguire controversially headed in the winner from a Bruno Fernandes free-kick. Leicester manager Ruud van Nistelrooy expressed his discontent, claiming Maguire was offside, a decision that stood due to the absence of VAR at this stage of the competition.

The victory allows Manchester United to progress to the fifth round of the FA Cup, marking their 10th advancement in the last 11 seasons. Despite the win, United manager Ruben Amorim acknowledged that his team must significantly improve their performance, stating that while the result was positive, the display was far from satisfactory.
