Profile of Yokohama F. Marinos: Sandy Walsh's New Club

Posted on February 11, 2025

Sandy Walsh, a right-back for the Indonesian national team, has officially joined Yokohama F. Marinos, a club based in Japan. He has signed a two-year contract that runs until the summer of 2027, although details regarding the transfer fee from KV Mechelen have not been disclosed. Yokohama F. Marinos is known as one of the most successful clubs in Japan, having been founded in 1972 and boasting a rich history of winning various trophies.

The club enjoyed significant success during the 1980s, winning the Japan Soccer League (JSL) titles in 1988 and 1989, as well as the Emperor's Cup multiple times. Since transitioning to the J1 League in 1992, they have won the league championship five times, with their most recent achievement being the Japanese Super Cup in 2023.

Yokohama F. Marinos has a strong connection to Manchester City, as the Abu Dhabi United Group (ADUG) acquired a 20% stake in the club in 2014. Nissan Motors currently holds the remaining 80% of the shares. The club also has a local rival, Yokohama FC, which has just been promoted to the J1 League this season. Their coach, Steve Holland, previously served as an assistant manager at Chelsea and the England national team.

With Sandy Walsh's arrival, who will play alongside former Arsenal player Ryo Miyaichi, Yokohama F. Marinos hopes to strengthen their squad ahead of the upcoming J1 League season, set to kick off on February 14. Their first match will be against Niigata on February 15, and there are high expectations for Walsh's contributions to the team's success.
