Arsenal Fined £65,000 for Player Misconduct During Lewis-Skelly Red Card Incident

Posted on February 18, 2025

Arsenal FC has been fined £65,000 by the Football Association (FA) for failing to control their players following a contentious red card issued to Myles Lewis-Skelly during their Premier League match against Wolverhampton Wanderers. The incident occurred on January 25, when referee Michael Oliver showed a straight red card to Lewis-Skelly for a foul on Matt Doherty. The Gunners won the match 1-0 despite the controversy.

The FA charged Arsenal with the offense of "failing to ensure their players did not behave in an improper manner" after a number of players surrounded Oliver to contest the decision. The club accepted the charge before an independent regulatory commission imposed the financial penalty. Following the match, the decision to dismiss Lewis-Skelly was upheld by Video Assistant Referee (VAR) Darren England, who confirmed that the foul constituted serious play.

In the aftermath of the incident, the referees' organization, Professional Game Match Officials Limited (PGMOL), revealed that police were investigating threats and abuse directed at Oliver and his family on social media, stemming from the reactions to the red card. Arsenal later appealed the decision against Lewis-Skelly, and the 18-year-old's three-match ban was ultimately overturned, but the club's disciplinary issues during the match have resulted in this significant fine.
