Sporting CP Exits UEFA Champions League After Stalemate with Dortmund
Posted on February 20, 2025
Sporting Clube de Portugal's UEFA Champions League journey came to a disappointing end after they managed only a 0-0 draw against Borussia Dortmund in the second leg of their knockout round playoff. Having lost 3-0 in the first leg in Lisbon, Sporting faced an uphill battle at Westfalenstadion and struggled to mount any real challenge, failing to score and only registering a single shot on target late in the match.
The game saw Rui Silva shine as Sporting's standout performer, notably saving a penalty from Serhou Guirassy and making several crucial stops to keep the scoreline respectable. Despite Dortmund dominating the match with 18 shots to Sporting's 6, the Portuguese side's defensive efforts kept them from conceding again. Giovanni Reyna's late attempt that hit the post was the closest Dortmund came to breaking the deadlock in the second half.
With this result, Sporting's hopes of progressing in the Champions League were dashed, and they now shift their focus to domestic competitions. The team, which started the Champions League campaign with promise under former manager Ruben Amorim, has struggled in recent matches, failing to replicate that early success after his departure to Manchester United. Looking ahead, Sporting aims to defend their Primeira Liga title and pursue the Taça de Portugal, marking a crucial period in their season as they seek to bounce back from this disappointing exit.
