Mourinho Receives Four-Match Ban for Controversial Comments After Istanbul Derby

Posted on February 28, 2025

Fenerbahce manager Jose Mourinho has been handed a four-match ban and fined approximately £35,194 following remarks made after the Istanbul derby against local rivals Galatasaray. The match, which ended in a 0-0 draw, had been officiated by Slovenian referee Slavko Vincic at the request of both clubs for a foreign official. However, a Turkish fourth official was present, which led Mourinho to voice his criticism of Turkish referees during his post-match press conference.

The Turkish Football Federation (TFF) imposed sanctions on Mourinho for making derogatory statements towards the officiating and for suggesting that Turkish football is plagued by chaos. His comments were deemed offensive and contrary to the principles of sportsmanship, prompting the TFF to ban him from the dressing room and dugout for two games, in addition to a fine of 117,000 Turkish lira (£2,543). Mourinho also received a further two-match ban and an additional fine of £32,651 for comments made during his press conference that were described as divisive and potentially encouraging violence.

Fenerbahce has announced plans to appeal the penalties. Mourinho's remarks included criticisms directed at the opposing team, which the TFF characterized as contrary to the ethics of sports. This incident adds to the ongoing narrative of Mourinho's contentious relationship with Turkish football, and it remains to be seen how the appeal process will unfold.
