Jose Mourinho Takes Legal Action Against Galatasaray Over Racism Allegations
Posted on March 01, 2025
Jose Mourinho, the current head coach of Fenerbahce, has initiated legal proceedings against Galatasaray, seeking approximately £42,000 in damages after being accused of making racist remarks. The accusations arose following a goalless draw between the two clubs, during which Mourinho made controversial comments regarding the Galatasaray bench, describing them as "jumping like monkeys." Galatasaray responded by stating their intention to pursue criminal charges against him.
Fenerbahce has publicly confirmed the lawsuit, which amounts to 1,907,000 Turkish Lira—a symbolic figure that references the year the club was established. Mourinho claims that the allegations have attacked his personal rights. In a statement, Fenerbahce emphasized that the comments made by Mourinho were taken out of context and should not be associated with racism. The club has also appealed against the four-match ban imposed on Mourinho by the Turkish Football Federation (TFF) for his remarks and conduct related to the officiating of the match.
The TFF has imposed significant sanctions on Mourinho, citing derogatory comments directed at a Turkish fourth official and a broader criticism of Turkish football. Alongside the financial penalties, Mourinho has received a two-match ban from the touchline. Notably, former Chelsea striker Didier Drogba has come to Mourinho's defense, describing him as a father figure during his career. As the situation unfolds, Mourinho continues to assert his innocence while Fenerbahce prepares to challenge the disciplinary actions taken against their coach.
