Osasuna Appeals Against Ineligibility of Barcelona's Inigo Martinez
Posted on March 29, 2025
Osasuna has formally lodged an appeal with the Royal Spanish Football Federation, asserting that Barcelona defender Inigo Martinez was ineligible to compete in their recent match on March 28. This contention arises from Martinez's absence from the Spanish national team due to a knee injury, which prevented him from joining the squad for the international break.
According to FIFA regulations, a player who has been called up to their national team but fails to report due to injury cannot participate for their club within five days of the international window closing, unless they have received permission from the national football association. Martinez played the full 90 minutes in Barcelona's 3-0 victory over Osasuna, a match that was rescheduled following the passing of club doctor Carles Minarro Garcia.
Osasuna's official statement emphasized their belief that Martinez's participation in the match violated FIFA rules, prompting them to seek redress for what they consider an improper fielding of the player. The club is advocating for fairness and equality within the competition, insisting that their rights be upheld in this matter.
In addition to the controversy surrounding Martinez, Barcelona will also face challenges on the pitch, as midfielder Dani Olmo is set to be sidelined for three weeks due to a right adductor injury sustained during the match against Osasuna. This adds to Barcelona's concerns as they navigate the busy schedule ahead.
