Brazil Parts Ways with Dorival Junior Following Heavy Defeat to Argentina
Posted on March 29, 2025
The Brazilian Football Confederation (CBF) has officially sacked manager Dorival Junior after a disappointing 4-1 loss to arch-rivals Argentina in World Cup qualifying. This defeat marks a critical point in Brazil's campaign, as they currently sit fourth in the South American qualifying group, having lost five of their 14 matches. Despite the challenges, Brazil remains in a strong position to qualify for the 2026 World Cup.
Dorival, who took charge of the national team in January 2024, had a mixed record during his tenure, winning seven, drawing six, and losing three of his 16 matches. His time as manager began on a positive note with a victory against England at Wembley, but the recent loss to Argentina, a team that has already secured its spot in the upcoming World Cup, proved to be the tipping point for the CBF.
In their announcement regarding Dorival's departure, the CBF expressed gratitude for his efforts and wished him success in his future endeavors. The federation is now actively searching for a replacement. Brazilian media reports suggest that Jorge Jesus, currently the head coach of Al-Hilal, is a leading candidate to take over the role.
Prior to Dorival’s appointment, Brazil had attempted to secure Real Madrid’s Carlo Ancelotti as their head coach, indicating the high ambitions of the CBF as they look towards the next World Cup. With the search for a new manager underway, Brazil aims to reinvigorate its campaign and restore its status as a dominant force in international football.
