Spurs Held to 1-1 Draw by Eintracht Frankfurt in Europa League Quarter-Final
Posted on April 11, 2025
Tottenham Hotspur faced Eintracht Frankfurt in the first leg of their Europa League quarter-final, ending the match in a 1-1 draw at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium. Despite an early setback, Spurs showed resilience and determination to secure a crucial away goal for the second leg.
The match began with a swift blow to Tottenham’s hopes as Frankfurt's Hugo Ekitike opened the scoring just six minutes into the game. Ekitike cut in from the left side and skillfully placed his shot into the bottom corner, giving the Bundesliga side an early advantage. However, the home team responded positively, pushing forward to find an equalizer.
Tottenham's efforts paid off in the 26th minute when Pedro Porro flicked home a well-placed ball from James Maddison, leveling the score. After equalizing, Spurs continued to dominate possession and created several chances, including a shot from Lucas Bergvall that hit the crossbar and multiple attempts from Heung-Min Son that were saved by Frankfurt's goalkeeper Kaua Santos.
Despite their superior performance in the second half, which saw them hitting the woodwork three times, Tottenham could not find a second goal. Head coach Ange Postecoglou expressed frustration at the result but remained optimistic about their prospects in the return leg. He noted that the team's performance was strong and deserved a better outcome, stating, "We don’t get the win, but I can’t ask for anymore."
The draw leaves the tie finely poised ahead of the second leg in Frankfurt, scheduled for April 17. With both teams eager to progress, Spurs will need to replicate their attacking intensity while overcoming the challenge of playing in front of a hostile away crowd. The upcoming match is crucial for Tottenham as they seek to keep their European ambitions alive amid a challenging domestic season.
