Barcelona Stumbles but Advances After 3-1 Loss to Dortmund
Posted on April 16, 2025
Barcelona reached the Champions League semifinals for the first time in six years, despite suffering a 3-1 defeat to Borussia Dortmund in the second leg of their quarter-final tie. The aggregate score of 5-3 allowed the five-time European champions to progress, but the match marked their first loss in 24 games across all competitions this year.
Dortmund's Serhou Guirassy was the standout performer, scoring a hat trick that included a penalty in the 11th minute and two goals in the second half. His impressive performance brought Dortmund back into contention after a disappointing 4-0 loss in the first leg. The team started strongly, creating two early chances before Guirassy's penalty gave them an early lead.
Barcelona, who had been unbeaten throughout 2025 until this match, struggled to find their rhythm. Although they showed glimpses of quality, they could not convert their opportunities, with defender Jules Koundé missing a key chance just before halftime.
After the break, Guirassy doubled Dortmund's lead with a header from a corner, igniting hopes for a remarkable comeback. However, an own goal from Ramy Bensebaini in the 54th minute settled Barcelona’s nerves and shifted the momentum back in their favor. Despite another goal from Guirassy in the 76th minute, Dortmund's efforts to mount a comeback fell short as they needed two more goals to force extra time.
Barcelona coach Hansi Flick acknowledged the challenges faced during the match but remained pleased with reaching the semifinals, stating, "Dortmund did very well... But congratulations to my team; we're in the semifinals." The win marked an important milestone for Barcelona, who now look forward to facing either Inter Milan or Bayern Munich in the next round.
Dortmund’s Pascal Gross expressed disappointment over their first-leg performance, noting that they had the quality to compete better throughout the tie. This match served as a reminder of both teams' capabilities in high-pressure situations as they continue their respective journeys in European football.
