Manchester United Cancels End-of-Season Awards for Second Consecutive Year
Posted on May 14, 2025
Manchester United has announced that it will not hold its traditional end-of-year players' awards ceremony for the second consecutive season. The club had previously canceled the event last year following a disappointing eighth-place finish in the Premier League, despite winning the FA Cup. This year, the decision comes amidst a similarly underwhelming league performance, with the men's team facing their worst league finish since the 1973-74 season.
Typically, the awards night is an opportunity to recognize talent across the men’s, women’s, and youth teams, but the club has opted against hosting the event again. Despite the men’s team struggling in the league, they are still in contention for a Champions League spot, with hopes pinned on winning the Europa League. Meanwhile, the women's team has qualified for the Women's Champions League next season and will compete in the FA Cup final against Chelsea, adding some positive notes to the club's season.
In lieu of a formal awards dinner, Manchester United has decided to host a barbecue at their Carrington training ground if the men's team secures a victory against Tottenham in Bilbao on May 21. Awards for the men's and women's players of the season, along with the goals of the season, will still be presented on the pitch at Old Trafford before the final home game against Aston Villa on May 25. This shift in focus underscores the club's desire to prioritize player health and team morale during a challenging period.
