Phil Foden Opens Up About His Struggles This Season
Posted on May 22, 2025
Manchester City midfielder Phil Foden has candidly discussed the challenges he faced during the current season, attributing his struggles to off-field issues and an ankle injury sustained in a match against Manchester United. The 24-year-old, who previously had a standout season scoring 19 goals and winning multiple individual awards, has seen a significant drop in form, managing only seven goals in the Premier League this term.
Foden revealed that he suffered "bad" ligament damage to his ankle during a goalless derby on April 6, which sidelined him for two matches. Although he returned to training earlier than expected, the injury took its toll on his performance. "It's been difficult," he stated, acknowledging the frustrating nature of his season. "I know if everything was OK, I'd definitely be better on the field."
In addition to his physical struggles, Foden has dealt with mental challenges, mentioning that various issues off the pitch have impacted his focus and performance. He expressed hope that with the right recovery and mindset, he could return to his previous form, stating, "Hopefully come next year I can get my head mentally right."
As Manchester City approaches the end of a season marked by underachievement—with the team relinquishing the Premier League title and exiting the Champions League in the last 16—Foden emphasized the need for mental recovery among the players. He acknowledged the mental drain the season has caused and recognized the importance of regrouping for the upcoming challenges, including the Club World Cup.
Foden's situation will also influence discussions regarding his potential inclusion in the England squad for the upcoming World Cup qualifiers. He underscored the need for a conversation with both his club and the national team to determine the best course of action for his recovery.
As City prepares for their final league match against Fulham, Foden's reflections serve as a reminder of the pressures athletes face both on and off the field and the resilience required to navigate such challenges.
