Aston Villa Files Complaint Over Referee Error in Loss to Manchester United
Posted on May 26, 2025
Aston Villa has officially lodged a complaint with the Professional Game Match Officials Limited (PGMOL) following a significant refereeing error during their 2-0 defeat against Manchester United at Old Trafford. The incident in question occurred when Villa's Morgan Rogers appeared to score what would have been a crucial goal, only for referee Thomas Bramall to disallow it for a foul against United's goalkeeper, Altay Bayindir.
The controversial decision came at a critical moment in the match when the score was still level and Villa was down to ten men after goalkeeper Emiliano Martinez had been sent off. Despite Rogers nudging the ball past Bayindir, Bramall blew the whistle, believing the goalkeeper had control of the ball. However, video evidence suggested otherwise, and because the referee had stopped play prior to the ball entering the net, the Video Assistant Referee (VAR) was unable to intervene.
Villa's director of football operations, Damian Vidagany, expressed his dissatisfaction with the appointment of Bramall, describing him as one of the most inexperienced referees in the Premier League for such a high-stakes match. He emphasized that the club's grievance is not merely about the specific decision but about the selection process for referees in critical games. “We believe a more experienced referee should have been appointed,” Vidagany stated.
The ramifications of the decision were significant, as Villa ultimately finished sixth in the Premier League, missing out on Champions League qualification on goal difference. Villa manager Unai Emery shared his frustration, acknowledging the mistake but accepting the outcome, while captain John McGinn conveyed the emotional toll of the incident, highlighting how critical the goal could have been for their season.
As Aston Villa prepares to address these challenges, including potential player departures and financial implications, the focus remains on ensuring fair officiating in future matches. The club’s complaint underscores the ongoing discussions around the standards of refereeing in the Premier League and the impact such decisions can have on teams striving for success.
