A 53-year-old man has been arrested following a shocking incident during Liverpool FC's trophy parade, where a car collided with pedestrians in the city center. The incident occurred around 6 PM BST on Water Street, as thousands gathered to celebrate the team's Premier League victory. Reports indicate that 27 individuals were injured, with two suffering serious injuries, including one child.
Merseyside Police confirmed that the arrested man is believed to be the driver of the vehicle involved in the collision. While the event was marked by celebration, it quickly turned tragic as emergency services responded to the scene to assist those injured. Among the injured, four children were treated, and a cyclist-paramedic was also struck but fortunately did not sustain any injuries.
Witnesses described the scene as chaotic and distressing. Eyewitness Matt Cole recounted how the car narrowly missed him and his family, stating, "It missed myself and my family by literally inches." Another witness, Harry Rashid, described the car plowing into people at high speed, leading to confusion and screams as the crowd reacted in panic.
Police Assistant Chief Constable Jenny Sims stated that the incident is not being treated as a terrorist event and is believed to be an isolated incident. She expressed her condolences to those affected and commended the emergency responders for their swift actions.
Liverpool FC released a statement expressing their concern for those impacted by the incident and confirmed that they are in contact with the police regarding the situation. The club emphasized their support for the emergency services and local authorities as they manage the aftermath of the event.
As investigations continue, the community remains in shock, grappling with the contrast between the joyous occasion of the trophy parade and the unfortunate incident that disrupted the celebrations.
