Manchester United Booed Off After Defeat to ASEAN All-Stars in Malaysia
Posted on May 29, 2025
Manchester United faced a disappointing start to their post-season tour in Asia, losing 1-0 to the ASEAN All-Stars in Kuala Lumpur, leading to a chorus of boos from frustrated fans. The match, held at the Bukit Jalil Stadium, marked United's first visit to Malaysia since 2009, but the performance failed to meet expectations, especially after a challenging Premier League season that saw them finish 15th.
Head coach Ruben Amorim expressed that the reaction from the crowd could serve as a wake-up call for the players. Despite making numerous substitutions—utilizing 25 outfield players during the match—United struggled to convert their chances, reflecting their persistent goal-scoring woes. Myanmar winger Maung Maung Lwin scored the decisive goal in the second half, sealing the victory for the Southeast Asian team in front of an official attendance of 72,550.
Amorim acknowledged the disappointment, stating, "The boos maybe are something we need," and emphasized the importance of addressing the team's poor performance. This loss came just hours after the club announced that Matheus Cunha was cleared for a medical ahead of a potential £62.5 million transfer to Old Trafford, further highlighting the urgency for improvement as they prepare for the next season.
After a grueling campaign that included 60 matches across all competitions, United's management is keen on rejuvenating the squad. While Amorim refrained from discussing the Cunha situation, he hinted at upcoming changes, stating, "We will see, but there will be some changes."
As the team heads to Hong Kong for their next fixture, there are still around 10,000 tickets left for the match, raising questions about fan confidence in the squad following this latest setback. Amorim encouraged local supporters to continue backing the club, drawing from his own experiences as a Benfica fan during tough times.
United's journey continues as they look to turn their fortunes around ahead of the new season, with fans hoping for a more positive display in their upcoming matches.
