Ángel Di María Set to Return to Boyhood Club Rosario Central
Posted on May 30, 2025
Ángel Di María, the experienced winger currently with Benfica, has announced his return to his boyhood club, Rosario Central, after a tumultuous year that included threats that previously halted his move. The 37-year-old Argentine will rejoin Rosario Central, where he began his professional career in 2005, marking a significant homecoming.
The announcement came from Rosario Central, which joyfully welcomed Di María back, stating, "Our history together has more pages to write. Welcome home." Di María initially left Rosario for Benfica, marking the start of a successful European career that included stints at Real Madrid, Manchester United, Paris Saint-Germain, and Juventus, where he played over 700 matches across all competitions.
Last summer, Di María was on the verge of rejoining Rosario, but he was forced to reconsider due to escalating drug-related violence in the area. He had received serious threats, including a chilling incident involving a severed pig's head and a warning aimed at his family. Reflecting on this experience, Di María described the period as "horrible," where he and his family lived in fear, preventing him from fulfilling his dream of returning to his roots.
Throughout his illustrious career, Di María has accumulated an impressive array of honors, winning 30 trophies in Europe, including league titles in three different countries and the prestigious Champions League in the 2013-14 season with Real Madrid. He also enjoyed international success with Argentina, lifting the World Cup and two Copa América titles.
Di María rejoined Benfica in 2023 and is set to leave the club after participating in next month's Club World Cup in the United States. His return to Rosario Central is anticipated to be a poignant chapter in his career, allowing him to reconnect with his origins and contribute to the club where his journey began.
