Brentford Signs Caoimhin Kelleher as Mark Flekken Joins Bayer Leverkusen
Posted on June 04, 2025
Brentford has completed the signing of goalkeeper Caoimhin Kelleher from Liverpool, following the departure of Mark Flekken to Bayer Leverkusen. The deal for Kelleher is reported to be an initial £12.5 million, which could rise to £18 million with add-ons, while Flekken has been sold for approximately £8 million.
Kelleher, a Republic of Ireland international, has signed a five-year contract with Brentford, with an option for an additional year. The 26-year-old expressed his enthusiasm for the move, stating, "I felt for my own career that the time was right for me to go, to be a number one and to play every week." He also noted that he was excited once he learned of Brentford's interest.
During his time at Liverpool, Kelleher made 25 Premier League appearances and accumulated over 40 cup appearances, winning two Premier League titles, a Champions League, an FA Cup, two League Cups, and a UEFA Super Cup. As Brentford aims to solidify their goalkeeping department, director of football Phil Giles highlighted Kelleher's positive reputation and character, making him an ideal fit for the squad.
On the other hand, Flekken leaves Brentford after just over a year, having made 77 appearances for the club. He joined Leverkusen on a three-year deal, seeking to continue his career closer to home and with the opportunity to compete in the UEFA Champions League.
Brentford's move for Kelleher signifies a strategic shift in their goalkeeping ranks, aiming to bring in a player capable of stepping into a starting role immediately as they prepare for the upcoming season.
