Olivier Giroud Set to Join Lille After Leaving LAFC

Posted on June 28, 2025

Olivier Giroud is poised to return to France, having confirmed his move to Lille after terminating his contract with LAFC. The 39-year-old striker had six months remaining on his deal with the Los Angeles club but expressed a desire to return to his home country, where he last played in Ligue 1 13 years ago.

LAFC announced on Friday that they had agreed to let Giroud leave, following discussions that took place earlier in the week. The veteran forward is expected to play his final match with LAFC on Sunday against Vancouver before heading to France to finalize his contract with Lille next week. In a statement, Giroud expressed gratitude towards the LAFC fans, teammates, and staff, reflecting on his time in Los Angeles as a rewarding experience, highlighted by winning a trophy and participating in the Club World Cup.

At Lille, Giroud is anticipated to sign a two-year contract, filling the void left by Jonathan David, who departed the club at the end of his contract. Lille, who finished fifth in Ligue 1 last season, will compete in the Europa League next year, and Giroud's experience is expected to be invaluable for their young squad.

Giroud's stint in Major League Soccer saw him struggle for form, managing just five goals in 37 appearances across all competitions. Despite this, LAFC co-president and general manager John Thorrington praised Giroud as an exemplary professional who brought a winning mentality to the team.

As LAFC undergoes significant changes, including the departure of coach Steve Cherundolo back to Germany, Giroud’s exit marks a notable transition for the club. With Giroud’s return to Lille, he aims to rejuvenate his career in France, where he previously made his mark with Montpellier before moving to the Premier League.
