Liverpool to Retire Diogo Jota's Number 20 Shirt in Tribute
Posted on July 12, 2025
Liverpool Football Club has announced that they will retire the number 20 shirt in honor of forward Diogo Jota, who tragically lost his life in a car accident alongside his brother, Andre Silva. The club made this decision following consultations with Jota's wife, Rute Cardoso, and his family, ensuring that the Portugal international will forever be recognized as Liverpool's number 20.
The retirement of the shirt number signifies not only Jota's significant contributions to the club's successes over the past five years but also the deep personal connections he forged with teammates, staff, and supporters. Jota joined Liverpool from Wolverhampton Wanderers in 2020 and made a remarkable impact, scoring 65 goals in 182 appearances, including pivotal roles in winning the FA Cup and League Cup in 2022 and the Premier League title in the 2023 season.
In a statement, Liverpool's management expressed the importance of involving Jota's family in this tribute, highlighting it as a unique honor within the club's history. Chief executive of football Michael Edwards stated, "By retiring this squad number, we are making it eternal – and therefore never to be forgotten."
The accident occurred after Jota's car suffered a tyre blowout while he was en route to Liverpool for pre-season training, following medical advice against flying after a minor surgery. His funeral took place in their hometown of Gondomar, attended by a significant Liverpool delegation, emphasizing the strong bond between the player and the club.
As a tribute, Liverpool will also commemorate Jota during their upcoming friendly against Preston North End, where a minute's silence will be observed to honor both Jota and Silva. The club continues to receive an outpouring of support and tributes from fans and players alike, reflecting the impact Jota had on and off the pitch.
