Investigation Launched into Lamine Yamal Over Dwarfism Controversy

Posted on July 16, 2025

Barcelona winger Lamine Yamal is under investigation by Spain's Ministry of Social Rights following allegations that he hired entertainers with dwarfism for his 18th birthday party. The event took place in Olivella, near Barcelona, and included various guests, such as YouTubers and teammates. The move has drawn criticism from the Association of People with Achondroplasia and other Skeletal Dysplasias in Spain (ADEE), which deemed it "unacceptable in the 21st century."

The ADEE has filed a legal complaint, prompting the Directorate General for People with Disabilities to request an investigation to determine if the rights of individuals with disabilities were violated. They argue that hiring entertainers with dwarfism in this manner perpetuates stereotypes and undermines the dignity of people with disabilities. Their statement highlighted that such practices are explicitly prohibited by Spanish laws protecting the rights of persons with disabilities.

In response to the backlash, one entertainer from the party defended Yamal, stating that no disrespect was intended and that they performed in a professional capacity. The artist emphasized the enjoyment and participation of all attendees, insisting that their role was not demeaning. Barcelona, meanwhile, has remained cautious in their response, stating they would reassess their position once more information becomes available regarding the incident.
