Crystal Palace Fans Protest UEFA's Decision to Demote Club to Conference League

Posted on July 16, 2025

Crystal Palace supporters have organized a significant protest against UEFA's recent decision to demote the club to the Europa Conference League. Hundreds of fans marched to Selhurst Park, brandishing banners and chanting against the European football governing body's ruling, which has left many feeling unjustly treated.

The controversy arose after Crystal Palace qualified for the Europa League by winning the FA Cup in May, marking their first major trophy. However, they were demoted to a lower-tier competition due to breaches of UEFA's multi-club ownership rules. This stipulation prohibits clubs owned by the same entity from competing in the same European tournament, a rule that became applicable due to American businessman John Textor's dual ownership stake in both Crystal Palace and French club Lyon, who also qualified for the Europa League.

Palace missed a critical deadline set by UEFA to restructure ownership by March 1, 2025, leading to their demotion. Nottingham Forest, who finished seventh in the Premier League last season, will take Palace's place in the Europa League. Fans, including representatives from the Red and Blue Review podcast, expressed their frustration, calling the situation an "injustice" and arguing that the entire club and its fanbase are being penalized for administrative errors.

Crystal Palace Chairman Steve Parish echoed these sentiments, labeling the decision a "terrible injustice" and a "bad day for football." He emphasized that the club has been locked out of a European competition due to what he described as a "ridiculous technicality." The club is expected to appeal the decision to the Court of Arbitration for Sport (CAS) as they seek to rectify this situation and reclaim their position in European football.
