Arsenal Edges AC Milan in Pre-Season Opener
Posted on July 24, 2025
In their first pre-season friendly of the 2025/26 campaign, Arsenal secured a narrow 1-0 victory over AC Milan at Singapore National Stadium, thanks to a second-half goal from Bukayo Saka. The match showcased the Gunners’ dominance, especially in the latter stages, despite the close scoreline.
Saka broke the deadlock in the 53rd minute, converting a well-placed cross from Jakub Kiwior. His close-range finish came after sustained pressure from Arsenal, who had been frustrated by Milan's defense in the first half. Both goalkeepers, Pietro Terracciano and his substitute Lorenzo Torriani, made several crucial saves to keep the scoreline respectable for the Italian side.
Arsenal's head coach Mikel Arteta made a strategic move by including only one of the new signings, Christian Norgaard, in the starting lineup. The 18-year-old Ethan Nwaneri was particularly noteworthy, nearly scoring with a powerful effort that was saved by Terracciano. Following halftime, Arsenal made several substitutions, including the introduction of Martin Zubimendi, which further strengthened their midfield.
Although AC Milan showed moments of resilience, they struggled to create clear-cut chances against Arsenal's solid defense. The Gunners continued to threaten, with Kai Havertz and Leandro Trossard both coming close to extending the lead. Notably, 15-year-old Max Dowman made an impressive non-competitive debut, nearly adding a second goal shortly after coming on.
Post-match, Arteta expressed satisfaction with his team's performance, particularly highlighting Saka's development and readiness for the new season. The victory sets a positive tone for Arsenal as they prepare for the challenges ahead in the Premier League and beyond.
