Sunderland Secures Granit Xhaka from Bayer Leverkusen in £17 Million Deal

Posted on July 29, 2025

Sunderland has reached an agreement with Bayer Leverkusen to sign former Arsenal midfielder Granit Xhaka for a total fee of around £17 million. The deal consists of an initial payment of £13 million, with the potential for an additional £4 million in add-ons. Xhaka has successfully completed personal terms with Sunderland and is set to sign a three-year contract, adding vital experience to the club's midfield as they prepare for the new season.

Xhaka's arrival comes after he made a considerable impact in the Bundesliga, where he logged 33 appearances last season, scoring twice and providing seven assists. This transfer marks a return to English football for the 32-year-old, who previously played 297 times for Arsenal. His experience and leadership qualities are expected to bolster Sunderland's squad as they aim to secure their position in the Premier League.

After being granted permission to travel to the UK, Xhaka arrived via private plane and was seen alongside Sunderland's owner, Kyril Louis-Dreyfus. This transfer follows recent departures from Bayer Leverkusen, as head coach Erik ten Hag had previously stated that losing another key player like Xhaka would be detrimental to the squad's structure and culture. However, Sunderland's increased financial offer ultimately facilitated the move.

Sunderland has been active in the transfer market this summer, spending £107 million on six new signings so far. The signing of Xhaka is viewed as a significant step in enhancing the team's chances of survival in the Premier League. His ability to control the game and provide stability in midfield will be crucial for Sunderland as they navigate the challenges of the upcoming season.
