Newcastle United in Talks to Sign Aaron Ramsdale from Southampton
Posted on July 29, 2025
Newcastle United is currently in discussions with Southampton regarding a potential transfer for goalkeeper Aaron Ramsdale. The proposed deal is expected to be a loan arrangement with an option to buy, although no official bid has been made at this stage. Personal terms are anticipated to be straightforward, given Ramsdale's interest in the move.
The Magpies are actively seeking a backup goalkeeper to challenge their current No. 1, Nick Pope, especially after missing out on James Trafford, who returned to Manchester City after they activated a buy-back clause. Ramsdale, who previously played 30 Premier League matches for Southampton last season before their relegation to the Championship, could provide valuable competition and depth to Newcastle's squad.
Eddie Howe, the Newcastle manager, is familiar with Ramsdale, having signed him during his time at Bournemouth in 2017. The club had previously expressed interest in acquiring him from Arsenal last summer, but negotiations did not materialize. Southampton signed Ramsdale from Arsenal for a base fee of £18 million, potentially rising to £25 million with add-ons, and he still has three years remaining on his contract with the Saints.
The potential transfer of Ramsdale could trigger a "goalkeeper merry-go-round," as other clubs, like Burnley, are also in search of new goalkeeping options following the imminent departure of Trafford. Ramsdale's arrival at Newcastle would not only add depth but also create a competitive environment, as both he and Pope are England internationals, vying for opportunities to secure their places in the national team ahead of the upcoming World Cup.
With Newcastle looking to solidify their squad ahead of the new season, Ramsdale's experience in the Premier League could prove invaluable as they aim for a successful campaign.
