Pep Guardiola Weighs in on Lamine Yamal’s Messi Comparisons
Posted on July 29, 2025
Pep Guardiola has shared his thoughts on the ongoing comparisons between young Barcelona star Lamine Yamal and legendary forward Lionel Messi. Yamal, who has been making waves in both Barcelona and the Spanish national team, recently took over Messi's iconic No. 10 shirt, prompting heightened scrutiny and expectations.
In an interview with GQ, Guardiola emphasized the importance of allowing Yamal to develop his own career without the pressure of living up to Messi's monumental legacy. He stated, “I think Lamine Yamal should be allowed to develop his career. And when he’s been playing for fifteen years, we’ll decide if he’s better or worse. Let him develop his career.” Guardiola likened the comparisons to praising a young artist by comparing them to a master like Van Gogh, suggesting that such comparisons signify Yamal's promise but should not overshadow his growth.
Guardiola also acknowledged Messi's extraordinary achievements, noting, “Messi has been a big deal. 90 goals in one season, for 15 years, nonstop, without injury. That’s a big deal.” He urged fans and commentators to give Yamal the space to flourish without the weight of these comparisons affecting his performance.
As Yamal looks to build on his promising start, Guardiola's words serve as a reminder of the need for patience and support as the young player carves out his own identity in the world of football.
