Chelsea Secures Jorrel Hato from Ajax in Potential Eighth Summer Signing
Posted on July 31, 2025
Chelsea Football Club has reached an agreement to sign Ajax defender Jorrel Hato for an initial fee of £37 million, pending approval from the Dutch club's supervisory board. The 19-year-old is poised to sign a seven-year contract that will keep him at Stamford Bridge until 2032 and is expected to undergo a medical shortly.
Hato, who made his senior debut for Ajax at just 16 years and 335 days, is seen as a valuable addition to Chelsea's defense, capable of playing both left-back and central defense. He has made a total of 75 appearances for Ajax and has also earned his first cap for the Netherlands. The decision to sell Hato comes as Ajax looks to bolster its finances after a two-year absence from the lucrative Champions League revenues.
This move will mark Chelsea's eighth signing of the summer, contributing to a significant spending spree that has exceeded £250 million, balanced by player sales totaling over £150 million. The club has been active in the transfer market, bringing in talents like Jamie Gittens, Joao Pedro, and Liam Delap, among others, as they aim to strengthen their squad.
Chelsea is still pursuing additional attackers, reportedly engaging in talks with RB Leipzig's Xavi Simons. Meanwhile, the club is also open to selling players like Christopher Nkunku and Nicolas Jackson to further refine their roster. As Chelsea prepares for the upcoming season, Hato's addition represents a continued commitment to building a competitive team under new management.
