Tottenham Signs Joao Palhinha on Loan from Bayern Munich
Posted on August 04, 2025
Tottenham Hotspur has finalized the loan signing of Joao Palhinha from Bayern Munich for the upcoming season. The 30-year-old Portuguese midfielder joins Spurs after a season where he made limited appearances, featuring in just 17 Bundesliga matches since transferring to Bayern from Fulham in 2024 for £42.3 million.
Spurs manager Thomas Frank expressed a strong desire to reinforce the squad with a defensive-minded midfielder amidst uncertainties surrounding the futures of Yves Bissouma and Rodrigo Bentancur. The deal includes an option for Tottenham to secure Palhinha on a permanent basis at the conclusion of his loan spell.
Palhinha brings a wealth of Premier League experience to the team, having made 68 appearances during his two years with Fulham. His previous stint in the English top-flight was marked by impressive defensive statistics, including leading the league with 300 tackles, significantly outperforming other players in this category. However, his aggressive playing style has seen him receive 27 yellow cards over the last two seasons, indicating a potential risk for disciplinary issues.
As Tottenham's third summer signing, following the acquisition of Mohammed Kudus for £55 million and the permanent signing of Mathys Tel, Palhinha is expected to add much-needed balance to a squad that has prioritized attacking flair. His ability to win tackles and dominate aerial duels will be crucial in strengthening Spurs' midfield and providing a solid foundation for their defensive strategies.
Former coach Edu Rubio praised Palhinha’s leadership qualities and his ability to enhance Tottenham's creative midfield by offering a secure defensive presence, suggesting that his addition could prove beneficial for the team as they aim for a successful season ahead.
