Son Heung-min has officially left Tottenham Hotspur to join Los Angeles FC (LAFC) in a landmark move for Major League Soccer (MLS), with the transfer fee exceeding £20 million. The 33-year-old South Korean forward, who served as Tottenham's captain, completed a two-year contract that includes an option for an additional two years. This transition marks the end of a decade-long tenure at Spurs, where he became one of the club's all-time greats.
In a press conference announcing his move, Son expressed that while LAFC was not his initial preference, a conversation with the club's co-president, John Thorrington, significantly influenced his decision. "He changed my mind, changed my heart, my brain," Son stated, emphasizing his excitement about joining a club with a rich history and ambitious goals. He aims to contribute to LAFC's pursuit of trophies and is eager to embrace the challenges of playing in the MLS.
Son's final appearance for Tottenham came during a pre-season friendly against Newcastle in Seoul, South Korea. During his time with Spurs, he scored a remarkable 173 goals in 454 matches and led the team to victory in the Europa League final, securing their first trophy in 17 years. Tottenham chairman Daniel Levy praised Son as "one of the greatest players" in the club's history, expressing gratitude for his contributions both on and off the pitch.
As Son settles into his new role at LAFC, he joins a competitive squad that is currently positioned sixth in the Western Conference. The prospect of reuniting with former Spurs teammate Hugo Lloris adds to the excitement of this new chapter in his illustrious career.
