Darwin Nunez Set for Al-Hilal Move as Liverpool Cashes In

Posted on August 08, 2025

Liverpool has reached an agreement to sell striker Darwin Nunez to Saudi Arabian club Al-Hilal for a fee of £46.3 million (€53 million). The 26-year-old Uruguayan forward, who joined Liverpool from Benfica in June 2022 for an initial fee of £64 million, is expected to undergo a medical examination soon as part of his transfer to the Saudi Pro League.

Nunez's time at Liverpool has been marked by both promise and inconsistency. Despite scoring 40 goals in 143 appearances for the club, his role has diminished, particularly last season when he only started eight Premier League matches during Liverpool's title-winning campaign. The sale of Nunez is anticipated to bolster Liverpool's finances, potentially paving the way for a move for Newcastle striker Alexander Isak, who has been valued at around £150 million.

Liverpool's summer transfer activity has been significant, having already spent over £250 million on new signings, including Germany's Florian Wirtz and France's Hugo Ekitike. The club has also offloaded players, such as Luis Diaz to Bayern Munich for £65.5 million and Tyler Morton to Lyon for £15 million. Nunez’s departure further highlights Liverpool's strategy of reshaping the squad as they prepare for the upcoming season.

Although Nunez had moments of brilliance, including a stellar pre-season where he scored five goals, his overall performance has been scrutinized. He has struggled with shot conversion and accuracy, ranking poorly among Premier League strikers. The decision to sell him appears to be a calculated move by Liverpool, allowing them to invest in players who better fit their tactical needs.

As Nunez prepares for his new chapter with Al-Hilal, the club's fans will be watching closely to see how his career develops in a different competitive environment, while Liverpool looks to reinforce their squad in the wake of his departure.
