Liverpool Nearing Deal for Parma Defender Giovanni Leoni
Posted on August 14, 2025
Liverpool is reportedly on the verge of signing 18-year-old defender Giovanni Leoni from Parma for approximately £26 million. The promising centre-back has emerged as a key target for the Reds as they look to strengthen their defensive options ahead of the new season. Leoni, who is an Italy Under-19 international, began his career at Padova before having a brief stint at Sampdoria and finally joining Parma last summer.
The move comes as Liverpool seeks to bolster their squad further, with ongoing discussions about acquiring Crystal Palace defender Marc Guehi, who is valued at around £40 million. Guehi's future at Palace is uncertain, especially with just 12 months remaining on his contract, and the club is considering selling him to avoid losing him on a free transfer next summer. The playing time offered at Liverpool will be a significant factor for Guehi as he aims to solidify his position ahead of the World Cup.
Leoni's addition would mark a continuation of Liverpool's aggressive summer transfer strategy, which has already seen them spend around £270 million, though they have recouped about £170 million through player sales. The club has also had a £110 million bid for Newcastle's Alexander Isak rejected, but reports indicate that the Swedish striker remains keen on moving to Anfield.
Analysts have praised Leoni's aerial strength and technical ability, with Italian football journalist Daniele Verri noting that his skills allow him to contribute both defensively and in building play from the back. While starting opportunities may be limited initially, Leoni stands to gain invaluable experience training alongside established players such as Virgil van Dijk.
As Liverpool continues to pursue additional signings, the club's ambition to enhance its squad depth and quality ahead of a competitive season is clear, with Leoni potentially becoming a significant part of that vision.
