Chelsea Secures £40 Million Deal for Alejandro Garnacho from Manchester United
Posted on August 29, 2025
Chelsea has reached an agreement with Manchester United to sign winger Alejandro Garnacho for a fee of £40 million. The 21-year-old Argentina international was informed by United's head coach, Ruben Amorim, at the end of last season that he should seek a new club. This transfer marks a significant move for Chelsea, adding to a spending spree that has surpassed £500 million on wingers alone since the ownership transition to Todd Boehly and Clearlake Capital.
The initial offer from Chelsea was £25 million, but the final deal, which includes a 10% sell-on clause, positions Garnacho as the fourth most expensive sale in United's history, following high-profile exits like Cristiano Ronaldo and Romelu Lukaku. Despite Garnacho's potential, he had fallen out of favor at United, particularly after publicly questioning Amorim's decision-making following the Europa League final.
Chelsea’s manager, Enzo Maresca, has prioritized strengthening the left-wing position, and Garnacho fits the bill as a player who can provide competition for new signing Jamie Gittens. The move comes amid ongoing player sales at Chelsea, including forward Christopher Nkunku’s impending transfer to AC Milan and Nicolas Jackson's discussions regarding a loan to Bayern Munich. These sales are crucial for maintaining a positive transfer balance in light of UEFA sanctions faced by the club.
Garnacho, who joined United's youth system from Atletico Madrid in 2020, has made a notable impact since his debut, scoring 27 goals in 144 appearances. However, his time at Old Trafford has been marred by inconsistency and disciplinary issues, leading to his eventual exit. As he prepares to join Chelsea, Garnacho will be eager to prove himself and contribute significantly to his new team's ambitions in the Premier League and beyond.
