Antony's Proposed Move to Real Betis Falls Through

Posted on August 30, 2025

Real Betis has officially withdrawn its offer to sign Manchester United winger Antony, creating confusion regarding the player's future. Despite reports suggesting that United had accepted a bid for the Brazilian international, Betis later released a statement indicating they could not afford the transfer fee or the wages associated with the player. The situation has developed amidst ongoing discussions between the two clubs throughout the summer.

Antony enjoyed a successful loan spell at Betis during the second half of last season, scoring nine goals and helping the team secure a sixth-place finish in La Liga, as well as reaching the UEFA Conference League final. His previous performance likely fueled his desire to return to the club, especially after being included in a group of players training separately from the main squad under United head coach Ruben Amorim.

While it was reported that United sources believed a deal had been reached, Betis' subsequent withdrawal highlights the complications surrounding the transfer. There are also unconfirmed suggestions that a payment to Antony for outstanding wages from his United contract, which runs until 2027, could have contributed to the breakdown of negotiations. With the English transfer window closing soon, and the Spanish window remaining open a bit longer, the future of Antony remains uncertain as both clubs reassess their positions.

Antony's time at Manchester United has been tumultuous since his arrival for a record fee of £81.3 million from Ajax in August 2022. Although he started brightly, his form deteriorated, culminating in a lack of regular appearances and contributions in the last season. Antony previously expressed that he found happiness again during his loan at Betis, indicating a strong desire to make the move permanent. As the situation evolves, it remains to be seen whether further negotiations will occur or if Betis will consider a new bid.
