Marc Guehi's £35 Million Move to Liverpool Falls Through
Posted on September 02, 2025
Marc Guehi's anticipated transfer from Crystal Palace to Liverpool for £35 million has collapsed after the Eagles failed to secure a replacement for the defender. Following a standout performance in Palace's recent victory over Aston Villa, Guehi was granted permission to undergo a medical in London. However, the transfer fell through when Palace's attempt to sign Brighton's Igor Julio as a replacement failed; Julio opted to join West Ham instead.
Despite a deal sheet being submitted to extend negotiations beyond the 7 PM deadline, Crystal Palace ultimately decided against selling Guehi. Head coach Oliver Glasner played a crucial role in this decision, insisting that retaining Guehi was essential for the team's success this season. Glasner emphasized the need for the right replacement, stating, "If we don't have the right replacement, for me it's clear to keep him."
Guehi, who has just one year left on his contract with Palace, now remains with the club, but his future could be uncertain. While they miss out on the immediate £35 million fee, Palace will need to address his contract situation moving forward, as Guehi will be free to negotiate with foreign clubs in January. Although the club signed 19-year-old defender Jaydee Canvot from Toulouse for £20.8 million on deadline day, they still seek a more experienced option to bolster their defense.
The failed transfer leaves Liverpool with three senior center-backs: Virgil van Dijk, Ibrahima Konate, and Joe Gomez, along with summer signing Giovanni Leoni. With Guehi staying put for now, Crystal Palace faces the challenge of either negotiating a new deal with the player or risking a diminished fee if he leaves in the future.
