Luis Suarez Receives Six-Match Ban for Spitting Incident
Posted on September 06, 2025
Inter Miami's forward Luis Suarez has been handed a six-match suspension following an incident where he spat at a member of the Seattle Sounders coaching staff after the Leagues Cup final, which ended in a 3-0 defeat for his team. The altercation occurred shortly after the final whistle on August 31, amidst a confrontation involving both teams. Suarez, 38, instigated the melee by grabbing Sounders midfielder Obed Vargas around the neck, which escalated when teammate Sergio Busquets struck Vargas in response.
Following the initial confrontation, Suarez was involved in a heated exchange with Gene Ramirez, the Sounders' director of security. Despite being restrained by teammate Oscar Ustari, Suarez spat in Ramirez's face, prompting the disciplinary action from the Leagues Cup committee. In his apology on Instagram, Suarez expressed regret for his actions, acknowledging the inappropriateness of his behavior.
The six-match suspension will only affect Suarez's participation in next year's Leagues Cup, although Major League Soccer retains the authority to impose further sanctions. The incident further complicates matters for Inter Miami, as Suarez's teammates Busquets and Tomas Aviles have also received suspensions of two and three games, respectively. The Seattle coaching staff member involved, Steven Lenhart, has been suspended for five games.
Suarez's history of controversial behavior, including previous bans for racially abusing Patrice Evra while at Liverpool and multiple suspensions for biting incidents, has made headlines throughout his career. This latest incident adds to the scrutiny surrounding the Uruguayan striker as he continues with Inter Miami in the MLS.
