Andre Onana Set for Loan Move to Trabzonspor from Manchester United
Posted on September 08, 2025
Manchester United goalkeeper Andre Onana has agreed to a loan move to Turkish club Trabzonspor, although the transfer is yet to be finalized. Sources indicate that the deal should be completed in time for Onana to make his debut against Fenerbahce on September 14. The Turkish transfer window remains open until Friday, allowing sufficient time for the agreement to be concluded while Onana is currently on international duty with Cameroon.
Initially linked to Galatasaray, Trabzonspor emerged as the preferred option after Galatasaray opted for Ugurcan Cakir instead. Cakir recently transferred from Trabzonspor for a potential fee of €36 million (£31.2 million). Trabzonspor sees Onana as a significant addition to their squad, particularly after assessing their options following Cakir's departure.
The decision to loan Onana comes in light of Manchester United's recent signing of goalkeeper Senne Lammens from Royal Antwerp. This development has led to speculation regarding the futures of Onana and fellow goalkeeper Altay Bayindir. Although United management had previously expressed a desire to maintain a squad with four senior goalkeepers, head coach Ruben Amorim's preference for a smaller squad without European competition has prompted a reevaluation of this strategy.
Onana, who was previously viewed as United's number one goalkeeper after starting in the Europa League final against Tottenham, has struggled with form and injuries, missing the pre-season and the first few Premier League matches. His performance in the EFL Cup against Grimsby, where he was partially at fault for a goal, further complicated his standing at the club.
Having joined Manchester United from Inter Milan in 2023 for £47.2 million, Onana's transition to the club has faced scrutiny, particularly in light of the high expectations set after the departure of long-serving goalkeeper David de Gea. The upcoming loan to Trabzonspor presents Onana with an opportunity to regain form and confidence on the pitch.
