Nuno Espirito Santo Sacked as Nottingham Forest Head Coach

Posted on September 09, 2025

Nottingham Forest has officially parted ways with head coach Nuno Espirito Santo after 21 months in charge, following a turbulent period marked by internal tensions and a recent poor performance. The club's decision comes after Nuno publicly acknowledged a deteriorating relationship with owner Evangelos Marinakis, raising concerns about his future at the helm.

During his tenure, Nuno managed to stabilize the club, guiding them to a seventh-place finish in the Premier League last season—their highest position since the 1994-95 season—and securing European football for the first time in 30 years. His leadership helped the team avoid relegation when he took over in December 2023, despite facing challenges such as a four-point deduction for financial breaches.

However, the recent 3-0 defeat to West Ham, coupled with frustrations over transfer dealings, led to a downturn in confidence. Nuno had expressed his worries about the club's activity in the summer transfer market, indicating that he felt the opportunity to strengthen the squad had been wasted. The internal discord became evident, as discussions about the club's direction and recruitment approach intensified, particularly after the arrival of Edu as the global head of football.

In a statement, Nottingham Forest thanked Nuno for his contributions and acknowledged the successful era he oversaw at the City Ground. As the club moves forward, they are already in talks regarding his replacement, with former Tottenham manager Ange Postecoglou among the candidates being considered.

Nuno leaves the club after overseeing 73 matches, with a record of 28 wins, 20 draws, and 25 losses. His departure marks a significant shift for Nottingham Forest as they look to regain momentum in the Premier League and solidify their position in the top flight.
