Chelsea Faces 74 FA Charges Over Agent Payments

Posted on September 12, 2025

Chelsea Football Club is facing a significant challenge as the Football Association (FA) has charged them with 74 alleged breaches related to payments made to agents between 2009 and 2022. The charges primarily focus on transactions that occurred during the 2010-11 to 2015-16 seasons, notably involving high-profile players such as Eden Hazard, Samuel Eto'o, and Willian. Importantly, there is no indication of wrongdoing on the part of these players.

The club, which was under the ownership of Russian oligarch Roman Abramovich from 2003 until 2022, has reported these potential breaches to the FA themselves. Chelsea has until September 19 to respond to the charges. The potential sanctions for these breaches could include fines, transfer bans, or even points deductions. However, Chelsea is optimistic that their cooperation during the investigation will mitigate any sporting penalties.

In a statement, the club emphasized their commitment to transparency, noting that they had self-reported these issues immediately after the acquisition by a consortium led by Todd Boehly and Clearlake Capital in 2022. Chelsea's officials have stated that they are prepared for any financial repercussions, having factored the possibility of fines into their compliance with the Premier League’s profit and sustainability regulations.

This situation follows a previous fine imposed on Chelsea by UEFA in 2023 for submitting incomplete financial information between 2012 and 2019. The ongoing investigation by the Premier League remains active, and the outcome of these charges could have significant implications for the club moving forward.
