Altay Bayindir Retains Goalkeeping Position for Manchester Derby
Posted on September 13, 2025
Manchester United's manager, Ruben Amorim, has confirmed that Altay Bayindir will remain as the starting goalkeeper for the upcoming Manchester derby against rivals City. This decision comes after the recent signing of Senne Lammens from Royal Antwerp, who is viewed as a promising talent for the future. Despite Bayindir's previous mistakes in matches against Arsenal and Burnley, he has been entrusted with the goal for this crucial fixture at the Etihad Stadium.
Bayindir, who has started all three Premier League games this season, is expected to maintain his position following Andre Onana's departure on loan to Trabzonspor. Amorim praised Bayindir's experience, noting that he has played for Turkey and has had more exposure than Lammens, who is relatively new to top-flight football. The decision to continue with Bayindir appears straightforward, given the need for a goalkeeper with experience in high-pressure situations.
Despite having made mistakes that led to goals in previous matches, Amorim believes that Bayindir's familiarity with the league and his capabilities justify keeping him in the lineup. Onana's time at United has been marred by inconsistency, leading to the decision for him to seek a change in environment, a sentiment echoed by Amorim. The manager stated that, while Onana possesses quality, sometimes a fresh start can help a player rediscover their form.
Additionally, United will face the derby without key players Mason Mount, Matheus Cunha, and Diogo Dalot due to injuries, placing further importance on Bayindir's performance as the team seeks to turn its fortunes around in the league. Amorim emphasized the club's commitment to maintaining its proud academy tradition, even as they navigate a challenging season.
