Andre Onana's Troubled Debut for Trabzonspor: A Howler but Still Named Man of the Match
Posted on September 15, 2025
Andre Onana made a challenging start to his loan spell at Trabzonspor, conceding a goal in a 1-0 defeat to Fenerbahce during his debut in the Turkish Super Lig. The goalkeeper, who recently joined Trabzonspor from Manchester United, was at fault for the game's only goal after failing to secure a low shot from inside the box. The loose ball was quickly pounced on by Fenerbahce's Youssef En-Nesyri, who scored from close range.
Despite the error, Onana's overall performance was commendable. He made an impressive eight saves throughout the match, showcasing his shot-stopping abilities against a barrage of 29 attempts from the opposition. His efforts did not go unnoticed, as he was awarded the Man of the Match title, highlighting his significant contributions despite the unfortunate mistake.
Trabzonspor faced additional challenges during the match, including a red card for Okay Yokuslu, which compounded their difficulties. The defeat marked the team’s second consecutive loss and extended their winless streak. Onana's display, however, gives the club hope that he can regain his form, especially as he prepares for his home debut against Gaziantep next weekend.
Onana's move to Trabzonspor comes after a tumultuous period at Manchester United, where he struggled with consistency, conceding 150 goals in 102 appearances. He was part of a team that recently suffered a heavy 3-0 defeat to Manchester City on the same day as his debut. Trabzonspor will be looking for Onana to build on his performance as they aim to improve their fortunes in the league.
