Aitana Bonmati Makes History with Third Consecutive Ballon d'Or Win

Posted on September 23, 2025

Aitana Bonmati has made history by winning the women's Ballon d'Or for the third consecutive year, becoming the first player ever to achieve this milestone. The 27-year-old midfielder from Barcelona received the prestigious award at the ceremony held in Paris, solidifying her status as one of the top players in women's football. Her international teammate, Mariona Caldentey of Arsenal, finished as the runner-up.

Bonmati's remarkable achievement comes after a stellar season in which she played a pivotal role in Barcelona's domestic success, helping the team secure a domestic treble. She had previously won the Ballon d'Or in 2023 and 2024, making it five years in a row that a Barcelona player has claimed the award, following Alexia Putellas' wins in 2021 and 2022.

Accepting the award from Barcelona legend Andres Iniesta, Bonmati expressed her disbelief and gratitude, stating, "It's incredible to be here for the third time." She emphasized the collective effort of her teammates, saying, "If it was possible to share it I would, because I think it has been a year with an exceptionally high level."

Despite facing challenges, including a serious health scare prior to the Euro 2025 tournament, Bonmati's resilience shone through as she starred for both club and country. She scored the winning goal in the semi-final against Germany, demonstrating her ability to rise to the occasion in crucial moments.

Throughout the season, Bonmati contributed significantly to Barcelona's success, scoring 12 goals and assisting six others in the league. Her performance in the Champions League was also notable, as she was named Player of the Season, showcasing her influential presence on the pitch.

Bonmati's accolades now include three Ballon d'Or titles, multiple Champions League trophies, and recognition as FIFA's Best Women's Player. Her impact on the game continues to grow, as she aims to represent Barcelona and Spain for many more years to come, further solidifying her legacy in women's football.
