Sir Jim Ratcliffe Backs Ruben Amorim with Three-Year Plan at Manchester United
Posted on October 09, 2025
Sir Jim Ratcliffe, minority owner of Manchester United, has expressed his commitment to giving under-pressure head coach Ruben Amorim three years to prove himself at the club. Amorim, who has faced scrutiny since taking over at Old Trafford nearly a year ago, is coming off a disappointing season that saw the team finish 15th in the Premier League—its worst ranking since 1974.
Despite a challenging start to the current season, with the team struggling to secure consecutive wins and suffering an early exit from the Carabao Cup, Ratcliffe remains patient. He emphasized the importance of allowing Amorim the necessary time to demonstrate his capabilities as a coach, drawing parallels to Arsenal's Mikel Arteta, who overcame initial difficulties to achieve success. Ratcliffe stated, “Ruben needs to demonstrate he is a great coach over three years,” highlighting the need for a long-term perspective in football.
Ratcliffe, who took control of the club's football operations in February 2024, has been vocal about his vision for Manchester United, aiming for a sustainable and profitable future. He noted that the club's trajectory cannot be altered overnight and that developing a successful team requires time and consistent effort. Moreover, he indicated that the Glazer family, who still maintain overall control, are supportive of his approach and the direction he is taking.
As for Amorim's current squad, reports suggest that players are largely behind him despite the challenges faced this season. Ratcliffe's backing, however, has raised questions about the potential consequences if the team's performance does not improve in the coming weeks. With crucial matches on the horizon, including fixtures against Liverpool and Tottenham, the pressure will undoubtedly mount, making the upcoming period critical for both Amorim and the club's management.
