Italy Secures 3-0 Victory Over Israel, Keeps World Cup Hopes Alive

Posted on October 15, 2025

Italy maintained its aspirations for automatic qualification to the 2026 World Cup with a convincing 3-0 win against Israel in Udine. Despite the scoreline, the performance raised questions about the team’s form as they prepare for upcoming challenges. The match, held in front of a modest crowd of around 9,000 at the Stadio Friuli, saw Italy needing to secure points to stay competitive in their qualifying group.

Mateo Retegui emerged as the star of the match, scoring two goals, including a penalty just before halftime that shifted momentum in Italy's favor. The first half had been a struggle for the Azzurri, with Israel creating significant chances, most notably through Tai Baribo and Manor Solomon, who both tested goalkeeper Gianluigi Donnarumma. Italy's inability to capitalize on their own opportunities led to a tense first half until Retegui's penalty gave them a much-needed lead.

In the second half, Italy improved their performance, and Retegui's second goal in the 74th minute, a curling shot that found the top corner, effectively sealed the victory. Gianluca Mancini added a third goal in stoppage time, further emphasizing Italy's dominance in the match. Despite the win, Italy's play was perceived as shaky, and they will need to elevate their game ahead of their critical encounter with group leaders Norway next month.

With this victory, Italy now has 15 points from six matches, keeping them within reach of Norway, who lead the group with a significant goal difference advantage. However, for Italy to qualify automatically, they will likely need favorable results from other matches, particularly hoping for Estonia to take points off Norway. As they head into their next match against Moldova, there remains a sense of urgency for the Azzurri to find their rhythm and solidify their position in the qualifying rounds.
