Spain Dominates Bulgaria 4-0, Edges Closer to World Cup Qualification
Posted on October 15, 2025
Spain continued their impressive run in the World Cup qualifiers with a commanding 4-0 victory over Bulgaria in Valladolid. The match showcased the talents of Mikel Merino, who scored twice, and highlighted the playmaking abilities of Pedri, as La Roja now stands on the brink of securing their place in the 2026 World Cup.
The game began with Bulgaria adopting a defensive strategy, setting up two compact lines that tested Spain’s patience. Despite dominating possession and creating numerous chances, Spain struggled to break through until the closing moments of the first half. Mikel Merino finally unlocked the scoreline with a header from a set piece, assisted by Pedri's precise corner kick, sending Spain into halftime with a much-needed boost.
After the break, Spain maintained their momentum. Merino doubled the lead shortly after, again finding the back of the net with a powerful header from a cross by Grimaldo. The Spanish side continued to press, and their efforts paid off with an own goal from Bulgaria's Chernev, followed by a penalty converted by Mikel Oyarzabal, sealing the emphatic win.
Pedri emerged as the standout performer, orchestrating play and demonstrating his vision throughout the match. His contributions were crucial in breaking down Bulgaria's defensive setup, earning him a well-deserved ovation as he was substituted in the second half.
With this victory, Spain matched Vicente del Bosque’s record of 29 consecutive games without defeat, a testament to their current form. The team is now poised to mathematically secure their World Cup qualification with an upcoming match against Georgia on November 15. As they continue their unbeaten streak, Spain not only looks formidable but also aims to carry this momentum into the World Cup next summer.
