Turkey Referee Scandal: Hundreds of Officials Linked to Betting Accounts
Posted on October 28, 2025
The Turkish football federation has announced disciplinary proceedings following a shocking investigation that revealed hundreds of match officials were found to have betting accounts. A five-year probe uncovered that 371 out of 571 referees and officials had accounts, with 152 actively gambling, raising serious concerns about the integrity of the sport in Turkey.
The investigation revealed alarming statistics, including one official who placed an astonishing 18,227 bets. This discovery has prompted the Turkish Football Federation (TFF) to take action, as they aim to restore faith in the officiating and overall governance of the league. The TFF president, Ibrahim Ethem Haciosmanoglu, emphasized the need to clean up any wrongdoing within Turkish football, stating, "If we want to bring Turkish football to the place it deserves, we have to clean up whatever dirt there is."
Among the implicated officials are seven referees and 15 assistant referees from the top two divisions, along with numerous classified referees and assistants from lower tiers. Due to the severity of the allegations, those found responsible could face significant penalties, including lengthy bans from football-related activities.
The scandal has sparked mixed reactions from some of Turkey’s top clubs, with Besiktas viewing it as an opportunity for reform, while Fenerbahce's president expressed sadness over the situation. Many observers see this as a pivotal moment for Turkish football, which has long been plagued by controversies surrounding referees and their performances.
As the TFF moves forward with the disciplinary process, questions remain about the potential impact on the league and the future of the implicated officials. The fallout from this scandal could reshape the landscape of Turkish football, prompting calls for greater oversight and accountability within the sport. The need for change in the league has never been more apparent, and fans are hopeful for a cleaner, more transparent future.
